Discussion on Prabowo’s UN Speech and Indonesia’s Climate Commitment

On 24 September 2025, Indonesian civil society groups criticized President Prabowo’s speech at the 80th UN General Assembly, calling it contradictory and disconnected from realities at home. While Prabowo emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to addressing climate and food crises through rice self-sufficiency, reforestation, and emission targets, activists argued that these claims overlook the declining farmland, rising food prices, and delayed climate commitments such as the submission of Indonesia’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC). Experts from Madani, CELIOS, and ICEL highlighted deep economic inequality, continued fossil fuel dependency, and weak renewable energy ambitions that undermine Indonesia’s climate goals. They also warned that the human rights record, including the criminalization of activists and shrinking civic space, contradicts Prabowo’s rhetoric on peace and justice. The coalition urged the government to pursue restorative and just climate policies, phase out coal, protect forests, uphold human rights, and align domestic actions with global commitments under the Paris Agreement.
